I’m six weeks post my relaxer and the growth is starting to mess with my hair routine. My routine, which I’ve been using since I created it 3 years ago is the Back to Health routine. It’s a basic hair routine that has given me the discipline and tools to shampoo, condition and moisturise my hair effectively.

Right now I’m at phase one of my Post Relaxer Growth Management, the 6 week mark. This is the stage that your relaxer kit advises that you should consider retouching. If you want to realise growth, put your relaxer kit away … and start this new process with me.

To grow your hair, you just need to slightly change your hair routine in consideration of your new growth. You can’t pretend it doesn’t exist. In my books, growth is a GREAT thing, it’s just confirmation that your scalp is healthy enough to produce hair. Your job now, is to simply allow that hair to grow and not break.

Here are FIVE tips of managing growth during phase one:.

1. Extend your Pre-poo session to about 45 minutes to an hour. Ensure that you spend time applying oil to your scalp as well. The easiest way of doing this is using the trusted Aphro Comb which I love.

2. ALWAYS deep condition. Invest in a good conditioner. And if your hair is extra dry, add your favourite carrier oil in your conditioner mix.

3. DON’T use a normal towel to dry your hair as it aids in breakage. Actually, don’t use conventional ways to dry your hair. Allow your hair to drip dry, and then wrap it in an old clean t-shirt, allowing the excess water to be absorbed by the t-shirt. This is more gentle on your tresses.

4. Invest in a leave-in conditioner. Spray it on your scalp as well. After you spray in your leave-in, seal that with a frizz free serum (of your choice). If you don’t have access to a serum, use a light carrier oil.

Your wash day, is now your opportunity to equip your hair with as much moisture as you can. Your daily routine should allow you to top up any moisture requirements your hair has.

5. Plan out cute low  manipulation styles. Buns, Pony Tails, Day Wigs, … whatever it is, plan for it and prep your hair for that.

I have my go to styles that work well for my forehead :). Low manipulation styles = I’m not combing my hair too much, and allows my hair to rest.

  1. Very nice protective styling. Love what you’re doing with the dhuki’s. Now I’m living abroad, I’ll have to ask my sisters to get me some nice ones. You sure know how to rock them.
